CHARIS MINUTES
Your Feelings Follow Your Focus
This Charis Minute highlights a snippet of a longer teaching on John the Baptist. Andrew would point towards the focus of John the Baptist being a big part as to why John began to feel doubt and questioning about Jesus being the true Messiah. The teaching helps us to see a biblical pattern for managing emotions in your feelings follow your focus.
Does God love me – your feelings follow your focus
When it comes to knowing and experiencing God’s love for you there’s things that you can do that will make you understand and receive the love of God more. There is also things you can do that will push God’s love away from your perspective. God never turns away from you but more so your heart hardens towards Him. So of course living in accordance to God’s Word is good for you, but if you’re not feeling God’s love something’s wrong with your feelings. Your feelings follow your focus.
Who’s opinion matters most – your feelings follow your focus
If you aren’t feeling the love of God, you’ve been focused on something besides what God’s love has said. You know, there’s a guy who writes for a newspaper that just has it in for me. He’s lying about me and saying all kinds of things. I guarantee you if I got to listening to him and thinking about everything that he says about me, all my emotions would follow that and I’d be hurt. I haven’t actually read his reports, other people read it and have mentioned it to me.
You’ve got to keep your eyes on Jesus and it should not matter what somebody else says about you. It should not matter what your circumstances say about you. What your body says about you or what your checkbook says about you should not impact you. Your feelings follow your focus and you have to get to where God’s Word is truth and it trumps any fact to the contrary.
Your feelings follow your focus so what is a focus of faith?
We aren’t denying that things do look contrary sometimes, but that the contrary is a changeable thing. Whereas the Word of God is infallible and it will last forever. It’s impossible for God to lie and He is telling you that He wants you to go back to the Word. Yes, He could have a bird come land on your shoulder and talk to you and tell you exactly what you need. He could have a dog walk up to you and bark things. He can make every cloud in the sky have your name written on it and what you should do but this is not faith.
God wants you to respond to him by faith and that’s where the greatest blessing is. I really believe that God wants you to come up to His standard of walking by faith. Faith as your focus is what pleases Him and your feelings will follow your focus upon His pleasure towards you.
