CHARIS MINUTES
What Do You See In Your Heart?
In this Charis Minute, Rick McFarland looks at the heart and identifies the matters that flow through the heart, which enact boundaries in life. These boundaries could include what we do and don’t do with our health, finances or relationships. Rick encourages us that we are not victims in life but instead live according to the law of the heart, which is that a person’s external life will align with their internal beliefs about themselves and God. Referring to Abraham’s encounter with God, Rick highlights God’s ministry of planting vision to help us answer the question, ‘What do you see in your heart?’.
What issues do you see in your heart?
All of our issues come from our hearts. Consider the term ‘issues’ for a moment. In Hebrew, it translates to ‘boundaries.’ Yes, boundaries! It could be a financial boundary, a health boundary, a relationship boundary, or a promotion boundary. Whatever boundaries we are experiencing, they have come from the beliefs in our heart, but let me tell you some good news. If you don’t like the boundaries, they can be expanded. They’re changeable.
The boundaries in your life are not fixed, and you’re not a victim who is held hostage by your circumstances. There is a principle called the law of the heart. What exactly is the law of the heart? It states that your external life cannot consistently rise above or fall below the perception you hold in your heart about yourself and about God. This is a fundamental truth. You might experience a temporary rise, but eventually, it will revert to its original state.
The Case of Lottery Winners – what do they see in their heart
Let’s discuss lottery winners. They may initially rise above their self-perception, but they will eventually return to their baseline. You know that 90% of lottery winners over several years lose it all. Why? Because those who play the lottery have a poverty mindset, and there is the law of the heart. Why does one play the lottery? It is likely that they perceive their only chance to achieve abundance is to strike it rich. If you’re a lottery player, what do you see in your heart? So you internally say, “I don’t see myself as rich. I have to strike it rich.” If you do then win, you will still carry the same poverty mindset, continue to think in terms of scarcity, and make decisions that reflect that mindset. Consequently, your external life will return to the equilibrium set by your heart. What do you see in your heart?
Birthing Change In The Heart – what do you see in your heart?
I want to discuss how you can bring forth what God has destined for you in the spirit. This process must originate from your heart. Let’s examine a man named Abraham and how God worked with him to cultivate an inner vision before the miracle of Isaac could manifest. At the age of 90, Sarah bore a child, while Abraham was 100. This was indeed a miracle, but it didn’t occur spontaneously. Over time, God had to instil hope and an inner vision before it could materialise. For 25 years, God was nurturing a vision within him. How did He accomplish this? We will explore that.
Look at Genesis 13, verses 14 through 17. This is where God’s going to start speaking about Abraham having a descendant or descendants. God is going to create a vision for him and something Abraham can see on the inside.
And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward; for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered. Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you.”
I think this is important for us to get and to answer the question, ‘What do you see in your heart?’. So often our eyes are on right where we’re at, what we have, what we don’t have, our health situation, our financials, our marriage situation, the kids and if they’re serving God or not serving God. We have our eyes so much on the natural and God’s saying to you right now, “lift up your eyes because I want you to see something that I see that you don’t see. I want to change your facts with the truth.”
The Scripture above says, “Lift up your eyes now and look” Well, at this point, he didn’t have a descendant. Before you have descendants, you need a descendant. So God is creating an inner vision that Abraham is going to have descendants. How? He said, ‘I want you to look. What do you see in your heart?’
