How To Meditate On God’s Word

CHARIS MINUTES

How To Meditate On God’s Word

In this Charis Minute, Barry Bennett addresses the pursuit of how to meditate on God’s Word. He emphasises the importance of dedicating time to this endeavor, enabling it to resonate within us. By placing the Word at the forefront and participating in prayer, individuals can cultivate a more profound and intimate relationship with God. Such a relationship nurtures spiritual awareness and enhances the capacity to respond in faith when God communicates.

Bible College Australia Charis Instructor Barry Bennett

How do we meditate on the Word and pray throughout the day? What many people don’t realise is that we are all meditating all the time. We’re all thinking about something. Most of our day is filled up with meditating on what we’re doing at that particular moment, some relationship, some economic issue or what we’re going to do tomorrow or next week. So we’re all occupying our meditator with something. Knowing this, if we’re going to meditate on the Word and pray throughout the day, then there has to be some Word in us to meditate on.

Knowing How To Meditate on God’s Word Foundational Step: Get The Word In

A good reference scripture for this is Proverbs 4:20-22, and the instruction in this passage is to incline. What is it to incline? Iit would be like if you are at a noisy restaurant and you want to hear the conversation, what the person across from you is saying, you lean forward, you incline yourself. The same goes with the Word of God. We give attention to His words. We incline ourself to His sayings. We let them reside and do not let them depart from our eyes. We keep them in the midst of our heart. This is the practice of how to meditate on God’s Word.

How to meditate on God’s Word in practice

If you don’t have any Word in you, you’re going to have a hard time meditating on the things of God or on the Word of God. Keeping the Word in the midst of your heart can look like keeping one or a series of God’s promises in your heart. It could also look like having some Scriptures we note down that we are curious about and want to research more. Then it’s making time to do that research as we need to have time in the Word. The more you have time in the Word, the more you’ll have something on which to meditate.

Scriptures In Our Pockets – a way to meditate on God’s Word

Another idea on how to meditate on God’s Word is to carry Scriptures around with you. Now, you may be in a working environment where you can’t have a Bible open in front of you all the time, but you can carry cards in your pocket or in your purse or something and have a few verses or promises there. Pull them out a couple of times during the day, read over them, pray over them and ask the Lord to show you things from those verses. This will help you to meditate and pray throughout the day.

How to meditate on God’s Word with prayer

Prayer is just simply fellowship with God. If you’re wanting to get to know a person, you’re going to spend time with that person. You’re going to talk, ask questions, and you’re going to listen. All of that is in the realm of prayer. We walk and talk with God and we listen to His spirit. We can do this with the verses we are meditating on. Let me read another verse to you from Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Now, he’s going to end this verse by saying think or meditate on these things. So let’s think about meditating in the context of this verse. Meditate on whatever is true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report. If there is any virtue, if there is anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things. This is in contrast with what’s going on in the world. Too many people are meditating on the news or meditating on politics or meditating on Hollywood. They’re meditating on relationships or their past. Some are meditating on how guilty they feel or how unworthy they feel.

There can be a lot of meditating going on but it’s not the kind that is going to be a blessing to your life. So get in the Word, get the Word in you, walk and talk with God. Pray for yourself. With you’re thinking you will develop things and so you might as well develop a relationship with God. Meditating on God’s Word means that when He speaks, you hear and you’re able to move in faith.
