CHARIS MINUTES
Being Taught By Grace
In this enlightening Charis Minute, Mike Pickett explores the profound role of grace as our teacher and the life-changing experience of being taught by grace. Mike begins by addressing a common misconception that God teaches us through sickness and hardships. He references Romans 8:28, explaining that while we live in a fallen world, God’s grace allows us to navigate life’s challenges without being dominated by them. Â Mike concludes by illustrating how being taught by grace invites God’s grace to guide us through learning and growth, correcting us not out of discipline but out of a desire for our development.
Being Taught by Grace: Understanding God’s Lessons Beyond Hardships
I want to talk today about the aspect of Grace as our teacher. What better way for you and I to learn than to be walking in this process of being taught by the grace of God? Some people mistakenly believe that God teaches us by giving us sickness or hardships. While we do experience hardships and sometimes sickness attacks our bodies, those challenges do not come from God. God does not impose sickness or hardships on us to teach us lessons. Instead, He teaches us valuable lessons as He walks us through our experiences.
Romans 8:28 says,
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
This verse does not imply that those challenges originate from God. We live in a fallen world, and because of that, God has given us His grace. We don’t have to live according to those circumstances. Instead, we can rely on His power and grace to overcome them. As we continue down this path, we realise that when we embrace being taught by grace, He teaches us through His loving kindness and the covenant He has established with us because of His goodness.
Being Taught by Grace: Embracing Transformation and Denying Ungodliness
So if you look over in Titus chapter two, verses 11 to 12, it says,
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,
You see, a teacher deals with mindsets, the ‘why’ behind things, the framing of thoughts and conceptions in the heart. They focus on the way that we think and not just the actions. A good teacher understands that the way we think changes us from the inside out. As a reflection of being taught by grace, a teacher walks with their students through the process of change and transformation, even when the student does things wrong.
Being Taught by Grace: Living Out God’s Promises Through Transformation
God’s correction arises not from a desire for discipline but from His wish for us to learn and grow. That’s precisely what being taught by the grace of God accomplishes for us. It’s not about God imposing sickness to teach us a lesson; it’s about God providing grace to guide us through the necessary lessons for our growth. Even when circumstances reflect a fallen world, understanding this truth changes how we think, grow, and operate.
So, going back to that verse again, Titus 2:11-12, it says this for the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. Teaching us that denying ungodliness, worldly lusts, and will live, lest we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world. Let’s look into what this scripture teaches us. It teaches us how to say no to this world and how not to be led by our circumstances, or by our eyes.
Being Taught by Grace: The Power of Mindset and Righteous Living
The Titus scripture also teaches us to deny ungodliness as it denies a reverence for God. In other words, anything that does not give God His proper place as the number one position in our lives, we should say no to.  It teaches us to keep God as our priority, as our number one in our hearts, to keep our eyes fixed and focused upon Him. In denying worldly lusts, we’re not led by our five senses. The circumstances are not going to tell me how I’m going to live my life. No, that will never be the case. Circumstances may come. Circumstances may stand against me, but they will not dominate me. They will not dictate to me my growth and my success. The Word of God will. With grace as my teacher, God will show me how to properly implement His Word so that I find success.
Being Taught by Grace: Understanding God’s Goodness
It takes God living through us to live out all the promises that God has declared He has given to us. The Spirit of God living abundantly through us so we can manifest His goodness in every area of our lives, whether at school or at work, or at home or wherever we might be. We become a living, walking, breathing testimony of the goodness of God, of the grace of God. When we are being taught by grace, God walks us through our circumstances.
